Attorneys Partner with Altadena and Pasadena NAACP Branches to Provide Resources and Litigation Updates
STAFF REPORT

Gerald Singleton, Singleton Schreiber’s Managing Partner.
Singleton Schreiber, a prominent law firm representing over 2,600 individuals and 900 families affected by the Eaton Fire, will host a virtual town hall on March 12 at 6:00 p.m. The event aims to connect fire victims with resources and provide updates on ongoing litigation against Edison, which the firm believes is responsible for the blaze.
“We’ve done a number of town halls where we invite people to either go in person or virtual through Zoom, and can be very helpful for people. And these will be a number of different topics. We’ll always have some portion where we explain not just what’s happening with the litigation, but also how to proceed,” said Gerald Singleton, the Firm’s Managing Partner.
The upcoming town hall will feature representatives from the Altadena and Pasadena NAACP branches, who are partnering with Singleton Schreiber in representing Eaton fire victims. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about pending litigation, disaster loans, rebuilding programs, and grant opportunities.
Singleton emphasized an urgent deadline for those affected by the fire.
“There’s an important deadline on March 31st if you want to apply for an SBA or small business association loan,” he said. “And again, I wish the name wasn’t Small Business Administration because this is actually for anybody who had insurance but has a ‘gap’ — including homeowners.”
He added that residents don’t have to accept a loan if one is approved, but they will lose the opportunity if they don’t apply by March 31.
According to Singleton, the litigation process against Edison typically takes between two to four years to resolve. He said the firm already has video evidence of the fire starting from Edison power lines but is seeking additional technical data to determine why the fire began.
“So we know how it started and where it started, but what we need to know is why it started. And to do that, we need certain technical data from Edison, and that includes something called SCADA, which stands for Supervisory Control and Administrative Data. And that will show us where the fault occurred and when,” Singleton explained. “And Edison of course, wants to delay everything out. So they’ll be fighting and they’ll be trying to re-energize the lines and change the evidence and make it harder.”
When asked about preventing similar incidents, Singleton placed responsibility on the utility company: “Edison basically starts one of the fires every year, and we really need to get a push on them to get them to stop.”
The law firm has already filed a complaint, with over a hundred complaints filed overall that have been consolidated in front of a single judge. A hearing was held recently, with the next one scheduled for March 17.
