[Updated]  Authorities on Tuesday released the identity of a Pasadena man who was shot and killed by deputies after he stabbed an elderly woman, then charged at the deputies with a knife over the weekend in Altadena, authorities said.

Allen Mirzayan, 48, died following the deputy-involved shooting, which took place shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday along Figueroa Drive, at Lincoln Avenue, according to Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner Coroner spokeswoman Sara Ardalani.

Just before the shooting, he had stabbed a 78-year-old woman using a walker in the lower back, Lt. Barry Hall of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau said. A motive for the attack was unclear. Mirzayan and the woman were not believed to have known one another.

Witnesses flagged down a passing deputy and informed him what had just happened, pointing out the suspect and the victim, he said.

Mirzayan turned his aggression toward the deputy and began stabbing at the deputy’s patrol car while he sat inside, according to the lieutenant.

An additional patrol car with two more deputies arrived on scene, he said.

They held the knife-wielding man at gunpoint and attempted to take him into custody, Hall said. Mirzayan refused deputies’ commands.

“He eventually raises the knife and charges at them, and they shot him,” he said.

All three deputies fired their weapons, he said.

Paramedics pronounced Mirzayan dead at the scene.

The wounded woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

She was most recently reported to be in stable condition in an intensive care unit, recovering from both stab injuries and a broken hip, Hall said.

A motive for the stabbing that preceded the shooting was not clear, he added.

A car belonging to Mirzayan could be seen parked nearby with apparently minor damage to its front end, according to officials and video footage from the scene.

Hall described Mirzayan’s previous criminal history as “minimal.”

An autopsy was pending, according to coroner’s officials.
