L.A. County Supervisors Approve $50,000 Reward in ‘Ambush’ of Sheriff’s Deputy in Altadena

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Monday authorized a $50,000 reward in connection with an attack on a sheriff’s deputy who was fired upon in what officials described as an “ambush” earlier this month.

The deputy was not injured in the attack, which took place about 12:30 p.m. along Fair Oaks Avenue, near Mountain View Street, L.A. County Sheriff’s officials said.

Monday’s reward was initiated via a motion by Supervisor Kathryn Barger, whose district includes Altadena.

“This was an unprovoked and heinous act perpetrated against a law enforcement member who has dedicated their profession to serving our community,” Barger said. “We continue to ask so much of law enforcement and we must stand by them in their time of need.”

The deputy was on patrol in a marked car when she came upon a “crime in progress,” according to Deputy Grace Medrano of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“As she approached the group in her vehicle, two males, believed to be Hispanic, targeted the deputy,” Medrano said in a written statement. “The first suspect produced a firearm and fired several gunshots in the deputy’s direction. The deputy was not injured. Both suspects fled on foot and are still outstanding.”

“It is still unclear what type of crime was being committed at the time of the shooting,” Medrano added.

The shooting is being investigated as an attempted murder of a deputy, officials said.

“The stray bullets hit a structure and could have seriously injured or killed an innocent bystander,” according to a statement from Barger’s office.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Detective C. Gutierrez of the Sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets Bureau at (626) 798-1131. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
