The Zelter Quartet and mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin perform Sunday in Altadena; admission is free with a reservation

Melodia Mariposa will present Music in the Shadows on Sunday at the Pasadena Mausoleum in Altadena, with the Zelter Quartet performing Debussy’s “String Quartet in G minor” and mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin singing works by Schubert and Handel.

Martin’s selections include Schubert’s “Gretchen am Spinnrade” and “Where shall I fly” from Handel’s “Hercules.” The program also features selections from classic Halloween films.

The Zelter Quartet is Gallia Kastner and Eleanor Dunbar, violins; Carson Rick, viola; and Allan Hon, cello. Martin was heard in one of the title roles of “Las tres mujeres de Jerusalén” in LA Opera’s Community Opera and as alto soloist in Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater,” both under James Conlon.

Melodia Mariposa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit music organization. It grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, when founder and music director Irina Voloshina hosted about 70 free concerts on her driveway for her neighbors. Voloshina, a violinist who has worked on more than 600 film scores, lost her home in the Eaton Fire. At its first concert after the fire, in February 2025, Melodia Mariposa collected more than $15,000 and distributed it directly to 26 local musicians who had lost their homes.

The concert begins at 7 p.m., preceded by a pre-concert reception at 6:15 p.m.

Concertgoers enter Mountain View Cemetery through the gate on Woodbury Avenue; the concert is not at the main mausoleum building on Marengo Avenue. Parking is available outside the mausoleum and on driveways inside the cemetery.

Admission is free. Reservations are required, with a $5 refundable deposit per seat.

Music in the Shadows will run on Sunday, November 1 at 7 p.m. Pasadena Mausoleum, 2227 N. Raymond Ave., Altadena. For more information, visit https://melodiamariposa.org/upcoming/. Admission is free. Registration required.
