Altadena Guild Celebrates 72 Years of Philanthropy with 71st Annual Home & Garden Tour
STAFF REPORT
The Altadena Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital is celebrating its 72nd anniversary this year, marking a rich history of fundraising and community support that has generated over $3 million for local healthcare initiatives. As part of its ongoing commitment, the Guild is set to host its 71st Annual Home & Garden Tour on May 5.
The tour will feature one of Altadena’s quaintest neighborhoods, known for its diverse architectural styles by renowned architects.
The charming Meadowbrook neighborhood is named after the brook that once flowed through the meadow where the homes at 1930 and 1942 Meadowbrook Road now stand. At one point in time, the area was known for its citrus, vines, and berries.
As the Meadowbrook neighborhood developed between 1922 and 1947, renowned architects showcased a variety of architectural styles.
Glover and Kauth designed a Spanish Colonial Revival home with a backyard created by Frank Lloyd Wright Jr., which will serve as this year’s Home Tour Café. Harold Bissner and Frederick Kennedy Jr. designed a Modern home, while E.A. Daniel, a designer and builder, crafted a Colonial home. William Barber is responsible for the English Tudor home in the neighborhood.
The backyard at 1994 Meadowbrook, honored in 2018 by the Los Angeles Arboretum as “Where Gardens & Music Flourish Like Never Before,” is a must-see on the tour.
In addition to the architectural highlights, visitors will enjoy music, a display of vintage cars, and talented vendors.
Since its inception, the Guild has actively supported Huntington Health and Huntington Medical Research Institutes, both located in Pasadena. The Guild raises funds through its popular Annual Home and Garden Tour, with the support of major sponsors like Altadena Hardware Store and MonteCedro Senior Care Living.
Founded on Valentine’s Day in 1951, the Altadena Guild was established as a unit entity under the Women’s Auxiliary to Huntington Memorial Hospital. According to Ruth Billheimer of the Pasadena Star-News, the newly formed Guild held its first meeting on March 16, 1951, “…on a Friday afternoon at a tea, in the home of Mrs. Fred C. Nash, on Porter Drive.”
Over the years, the Altadena Guild has fulfilled its $100,000 commitment to the Hospital’s New Cardiac and Vascular Care Center and has made a new multi-year commitment of $100,000 to the Hospital’s Surgery Center.
By showcasing architectural gems and beautiful gardens, the Guild continues to raise funds for local healthcare initiatives, fostering a strong and giving community spirit that has endured for over seven decades.
Tickets for the walking tour are available at www.altadenaguild.org.
