Architects to Show Design Concepts for Rebuilt Eaton Canyon Nature Center

LA County Parks says Anne Mooney and Ludwing Juarez of Sparano + Mooney Architecture will present design concepts for the new center. Mooney is principal architect and founding partner at the firm; Juarez is a partner and principal.
The Robert M. McCurdy Nature Center burned in the Eaton Fire that began Jan. 7, 2025 and swept through Altadena, and the natural area around it has been closed ever since. Cristhian Mace, a County Parks biologist, said in June that the canyon was not expected to reopen during 2026.
Public feedback, planners and architects are shaping a design meant to take in fire science, history, culture and site planning, The South Pasadenan reported.
The building lost in 2025 was not the canyon’s first nature center. The 7,600-square-foot facility reopened in November 1998, after the Kinneloa Fire destroyed its predecessor on Oct. 27, 1993.
Studio-MLA principal Megan Horn told an earlier session in the series: “We don’t think of this as a place to design. It’s a system to design.”
