The Altadena Urban Farmer’s Market is, according to organizer Gloria Putnam, “a place for selling home-made and home-grown stuff.” Putnam describes it in the market’s Facebook page as a place to “encourage more local food production, and make that food easily accessible to Altadena residents.”
“The idea is to really ask this question: to what extent can Altadena feed itself? This is the beginning of a conversation about that,” Putnam said — that people can be inspired to grow food.
To that extent, there will be very few commercial vendors at the market, Putnam said. “It’s not a real farmer’s market — it’s a place for selling home-made and home-grown stuff.”
While the market is putting out a call for vendors, “we already have enough vendors to have a fantastic market,” Putnam said. The vendors to date are mostly from Altadena, Putnam said.
Vendor space is free, but the market is asking for 10% of cash sales — half of which will go to the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. The market is also encouraging vendors to accept Arroyo Time Bank dollars as well as real money.
A free membership is required to shop at the market. Membership forms will be available on site. Deadline for application for vendors is Oct. 1. To get a vendor form, email zanegreyestate-altadena@yahoo.com
Putnam said that information about the market can be found on its Facebook page,
