Thurs., Sept. 29

• Chamber mixer: The Altadena Chamber of Commerce monthly mixer will be at Body Freedom, 1270 Morada Pl., from 5:30-7:30 PM.  Members are $5, and guests $7.  Bring a raffle prize and receive commercial time to promote your business.

Fri., Sept. 30

• Comedy Festival Kickoff: The Altadena Comedy Festival, a fundraiser for Blue Star Families,  kicks off at the Coffee Gallery, 2029 N. Lake.  Friday night is “Sketch and Improv Night,” which will start off at 6 PM with an attempt to set a world record group hug with Fly, the Coffee Gallery barista (hugs are $1).  Improv comedians Keilly & Roeters, http://www.keillyandroeters.com/ start the festival at 7:30,. The Cool Table sketch comedy group http://www.funnyordie.com/thecooltable performs at 8:30.  The 9:30 show is Tigerpants/Dr. God http://www.drgodcomedy.com/  All shows are $10 each.  Magic every half hour by The Great Martini ($5). • Know your pad: “TechDaddy” Ken Gruberman will be at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St., talking “Tablets, eReaders, and More!” starting at 6 PM.
• Scissors Paper Rock Music Night:  Last one of the season, with Wives & Lovers (70’s lounge music), and the photography of Rafael Quinonez. Starts 7 PM at 1864 N. Allen.

Sat., Oct. 1

• Victory Garden class: Become a Certified UC Victory Gardener through the “Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative” begining class at the Altadena Community Garden starting this Sat., Oct. 1. The classes, part of University of California Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program, run from 9 AM to noon on Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 29.  Cost is $50 for the series, or $15 per class.  To register, call Jeri Huston at 626-584-0442 or e-mail at Jeri.Huston@yahoo.com
• Camp Mariposa Pumpkin Patch:  Join the Girl Scouts at Camp Mariposa, 615 E. Mariposa St., for fun, games, food, and pumpkins for the whole family.  9 AM-4 PM Saturday and Sunday.
• Rubio Canyon hiking series: Join the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy and docent Dan Abendschein, editor of Altadena Patch, for a hike across Rubio Canyon at 9 AM. Meet at the intersection of E. Loma Alta Drive and Camp Huntington Road at the base of the canyon in Altadena. You’ll be hiking on trails that had been inaccessible for decades, until the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy and its partners preserved Rubio Canyon in 2011. Learn of the canyon’s rich history as the home of the Camp Huntington Boy Scout Camp and Mount Lowe Railway.
• Altadena Comedy Festival: The Altadena Comedy Festival concludes at the Coffee Gallery today with “Stand Up Night.” Improv workshop from 1-3 PM, led by  Neil Garguilo, $25, to benefit the festival The workshop is limited to 16 students:email to confirm your spot: improvworkshop@altadenacomedy.com  Saturday’s shows start with a panel of industry pros, management and talent, who will advise comedians on how to manage their careers, at 5:30 PM.  Presentation of The ECHO award will start at 6:30.  Starting at 7:30,  “The Fatherhood,” a stage show of theater and standup by three local comics who ruminate about fatherhood.  This show has been performed at the Coffee Gallery Backstage several times before.  At 8:45, “Frontline Comedy” re-creates a modern day USO show with comics who have been to the Middle East.  All shows (except the ECHO award) are $10.   At 10 PM, the festival wraps up with a “Late Night Lock Box,” a comedy and variety show —  It’s free to get in, but you have to pay to leave. Sun., Oct. 2

• Classical Indian music at the Folly Bowl: The Folly Bowl, Altadena’s cozy outdoor venue, will hold “An Evening of Indian Classical Music and Dance” on Sun., Oct. 2, starting at 5 PM.  Performers include Alokparna Guha (katbak), Paul Livingstone (sitar), Pankaj Misra (sarangi), and Subhajyoti Guha (tabla).  Suggested donation is $15/$10 for students.  The Folly Bowl is at 1601 E. Loma Alta Dr.
