It’s Halloween weekend (even tho’ the event won’t be until next Thursday), but the stores and parks are already in the mood. If that’s not your idea of a good time, there’s Art on Palm at Wildwood Park, or maybe you can join the search and rescue team … or do some guerilla gardening. There’s something for every taste this weekend and keep coming back as we add more!
Friday, Oct. 25
- Beginning yoga at the Loma Alta Park gym, 9 am.
- Webster’s Community Pharmacy opens up the spirit of the season with a “Haunted Halloween Hunt” Friday and Saturday. Hunt for hidden treasures in return for prizes and special savings — Meredith Miller at Webster’s says “We’re giving out some nice discounts and mystery gifts to the Treasure Hunters! Of course there will be spooky snacks, and lots of Halloween goodies to stock up on. Webster’s Community Pharmacy is at 2450 N. Lake Avenue.
- Webster’s Fine Stationers, meanwhile, is still holding a Halloween coloring contest — grab an entry form at the store, color it in, and it will be on display thru the holiday, and you will be entered in a prize drawing on Halloween.
- Haunted House at Farnsworth Park Friday and Saturday at the Davies Building from 7-9:30 PM. Yes, there will be candy. And then, on Halloween (Thurs., Oct. 31) they will do it all again from 6-9:30 PM.
- Wicked Lit at the Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery, 7:00 PM, Thursday-Saturday. Go to WickedLit.org for details.
Saturday, Oct. 26
- Light’s up at Christmas Tree Lane, 9 AM-noon, Santa Rosa Avenue, Saturday and Sunday. As long as the weather permits, we will be putting lights in the trees every Saturday and Sunday thereafter from 9 to 12 until all the trees are finished. In the morning you will be greeted with donuts, coffee and hot chocolate and after 12 PM, lunch will be served.
- Become a Certified UC Victory Gardener through the “Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative” begining class at the Altadena Community Garden starting in October. The classes, part of University of California Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program, run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on October 5, 12, 19, and 26. Cost is $55 for the series, or $15 per class. - Altadena Mountain Rescue Team is holding a recruiting drive at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Dr. in Pasadena from 10 AM to 2 PM. Learn more about the organization, meet members of the team, see rescue demonstrations, and learn how you can help.
- Art on Palm’s fall show, benefitting Fisher House, runs from 9:30 AM-5 PM at Wildwood Park, 1419 E. Palm Street. Under a canopy of ancient oaks, 30 artists will display finely crafted works, from elegant wearables to memorable gifts. Artists and craftspeople in all media will be showing their wares, with refreshments by Jones Coffee Roasters and music by Bullfish.
- Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church Giant Fish Fry and Bake Sale, 11AM-3PM, 185 West Altadena Drive. For just a $10 donation you can enjoy a fish or ribs dinner “with all the fixins” including an ice cold drink; for a $12 donation you can have a combo dinner of fish and ribs. Also available will be a wide variety of home-baked pies, cakes, cookies and other dessert delectables. Proceeds will support CTS’ efforts in the community.
- Altadena Library e-waste collection will be from 10 AM-2 PM at the Library, 600 E. Mariposa Street. Help support your library and get rid of your old and dead electronics at the same time!
Sunday, Oct. 27
- Arroyo Food Co-op Open House: The Co-op will be holding an Open House on Sunday, October 27 from 2-4 PM for all members, neighbors, and guests. Come stop by to see the store, hear about our latest progress, or drop off a member-loan. Parking will be available at the Co-op (494 N. Wilson Ave, Pasadena) in our lot, or on the streets in the neighborhood. We hope to see you all there.
- Become a guerilla gardener: bring tools, gloves, water and excitement and help spruce up the “guerilla garden” on Altadena Drive north of Berendo. The garden, winner of an Altadena Heritage “Golden Poppy” award, is the brainchild of botonist Corey Howard, who says there will be weeding, planting, and moving some plants and rocks around. Noon to 4 PM.
- Millard Canyon Celebration with the Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy. Park at Loma Alta Park by noon to take the shuttle in for habitat restoration, or at 1 PM to be shuttled to a docent-led tour. If you just want to celebrate, be at Chaney Trail by 3 PM and be led on a quarter mile hike to the Conservancy cluhouse. At 3:30, hear about plans for the canyon and the Conservancy’s latest land project. Light refreshments will be served.
