Town council denies group home expansion, hears of library director’s death

The Altadena Town Council turned down a request to expand a group home from six to ten beds Tuesday night in the final council meeting of the year.

ATC bugAn almost-complete council* voted to recommend denying a conditional use permit for the home at 3085 Ridgeview Drive to the county planning commission.  The town council land use committee had earlier also recommended denial.

(*Councilmember Bernardean Broadous of CT 4610, who has not attended a meeting since August,  and Gretchen Seger were absent (thx Monica Hubbard for the correction!)

Also during the meeting:

  • It was announced that Barbara Pearson, director of the Altadena Library District for the past nine years, died unexpectedly Saturday night, Dec. 14.  Altadenablog is working on an obituary to appear later this week.
  • Altadena CERT will hold the first in a bi-monthly series of presentations on disaster preparedness on Jan. 9, from 7-8 PM at the Altadena Community Center. The topic will be preparing disaster preparation kids for home, office, auto, and pets.
  • The council also heard two presentations on school matters.  Karen Klages talked about Eliot Middle School’s performing and visual arts magnet program, and Linda Machida made a presentation on the School/City/Community Work Plan recently approved between the Pasadena Unifeid School District and the city of Pasadena.
  • Lt. Eric Lasko of the Altadena Sheriff Station presented crime statistics for the month, nothing that property crimes — generally involving thefts from vehicles — was up about 10 percent in the month.  Residential burglaries are down 10 percent from last year, although they are still a top priority, Lasko said.
  • Melisza Hernandez of the county parks and recreation department said that Santa will visit Charles White Park at 11 AM Saturday, but you must register for the toy giveaway at White or Loma Alta Parks.  Hernandez said that a weekend Santa visit at Loma Alta Park resulted in 650 people attending, with 500 toys given away.
  • Justin Robertson, a master’s candidate in urban planning and Altadena resident, made a presentation on a walkability study that will take place in January.
