On the balance, I think Seeger has been an enormous influence for the better in this country – I agree that he was mistaken to think so highly of the “Russian Experiment”, but a lot of leftists in this country were taken in, more by their own youthful idealism than anything else, in hoping, unrealistically of course, that communism would succeed. I’ve known a few of those old lefties – Lester Breslow and Leslie Kish are the pair who come to mind immediately – I think Leslie told me once he was in the Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War – and both of them, like Seeger, got older and wiser.

But as for the line that Seeger – or any other protester – should protest what’s going on in some other country, I respectfully disagree. This is where he lives, this is where he should be aiming his criticism.
