Spectators check out the interior of the new “Shakey-Quakey” earthquake simulators that debuted Monday at Eliot Middle School. Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and LA County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby debuted three of the simulators, towable trailers with hydraulic systems that can replicate an earthquake of up to 8.0 on the Richter scale. The new simulators, which will tour area schools, replace the originals which were built in 1986. The simulators are used to teach elementary school children about earthquake preparedness. Last year, the county said that the “shakey-quakey” schoolhouse educated over 25,000 participants in 51 events.
