- Map of the past: Sid Gally’s history tale in the Pasadena Star-News this week is the tale of Andrew McNally, who made his buck in Chicago (Rand McNally, anybody?) and bought 400 acres of ranchland in what is now Altadena. He built his mansion on Mariposa and Santa Rosa, of course, but also ended up selling much of his holdings to other “rich Chicagoans,” Gally says (including Arthur Woodward, who built what is now the Zane Grey Estate). McNally also had a role in the building of La Mirada, and his grandson Wallace Neff was a major local architect. Story is here.
