Garfield the cat always said, "I hate Mondays." Yesterday was one of those.
In addition to record high temperatures (we recorded 100 a few times unofficially yesterday, but haven't gotten an official high yet), the lights went out all over Altadena last night around 5:30. (This also explains why we went silent last night!)
PSN, fortunately, has the details on the outage, which was roughly bordered by Eaton Canyon, Loma Alta, Fair Oaks, and Washington. Cause apparently was power lines near the golf course that caught fire due to the heavy electrical usage in the heat.
UPDATE 5 PM: Several readers have alerted us (and we have confirmed) that the story is no longer up on the Star News website. What's up with that?????

A bit of an uncomfortable night–a little hot in our upstairs bedrooms without fans. Our only concerns were food in the fridge (which we ended up putting on ice at 10pm) and that paper my daughter was writing on the computer that she forgot to save. Thank goodness for autosave. At least we have a workable copy….

This certainly bodes very BADLY for the summer coming up. If this was too much for the power grid (even though high temps)then it’s going to be a long, long summer.
I know of no one that had their air on yesterday in my circle of neighbors. That means there is so much more drain to come when we run the coolers this summer.
I might also point out that (in line with the comment above) that battery backups are a NECESSITY for those with computers. They prevent the data from being dumped right away and normally allow 5-30 minutes of backup power (depending on your unit) that can be critical for information and the life of the computer.
Let’s hope this was just a bad unit that was found out about the DARK way last night as the outage went from 5pm to 1am…that’s a long time for one unit that affected such a wide range of our community. I was shocked (no pun intended) that one unit could hit from East side of Altadena all the way to La Vina!

Thanks for update on blackout. We were sweltering while our across-the-street neighbors had lights. I was checking Twitter to see if you had anything! This certainly doesn’t bode well for the summer.

Well, it wasn’t quite that bad over here near Fair Oaks – we had power back by, let me think, around 6:45. But still, I agree, if the grid couldn’t handle yesterday, what happens come summer…..

What was amazing though was to stand at the corner of Woodbury and Lake Avenue and look up towards Altadena and see on the lights of the cars traveling up and down Lake.

The Pasadena Star News article is no longer there. We are at the top of Lake, and power was out from 5:25 to 1:15 AM.

I agree that this is a bad sign for the summer to come. We’ve had at least 6 blackouts in 6 months where we are — some have been as long as 12 hours or longer (we had to re-route our entire Thanksgiving meal because our power was out for 15 hours!). I’m starting to think that Edison has deferred a lot of necessary maintenance in the Altadena area.
