The Altadena Library District unveiled its preliminary plans for renovating its historic 1967 Boyd Georgi building at Tuesday's town council meeting — and the solution is in the air.

Quite literally — plans call for building an addition cantilevered over the parking lot, as well as "selective demolition" of part the existing structure, all of which will add about 17,500 sq. ft. to the existing 22,000 sq. ft. structure, and more that double the amount of reader seats.

The estimated construction and refit costs are $18 million,  or $19 million if photovoltaic cells are added.

According to library director Barbara Pearson, right now they need to develop a way to fund plan specs — about a $1.8 million project — but the target date for any renovations are "quite a ways down the road."  The library has applied for congressional funding and is beginning to look at a capital campaign.
