The exhibition tells the stories of the many brave Californians who confronted discrimination and stood up for their rights. Fourteen interpretive panels with photographs and texts bring to life the heroes and heroines who fought for equality—from the Gold Rush to the present. Some became well-known voices and activists, such as author Upton Sinclair and concert artist and actor Paul Robeson; others were ordinary people. Topics include: citizenship, slavery, voting, land ownership, unlawful arrests, dissension, religion, censorship and education.
The exhibition is based on the book, Wherever There’s a Fight: How Runaway Slaves, Suffragists, Immigrants, Strikers, and Poets Shaped Civil Liberties in California by Elaine Elinson & Stan Yogi (Heyday Books, 2009).
“The exhibition will be used as a teaching tool for youth and to spark community dialogue,” said Lisa Wilson, Flintridge Center program director. “The struggle for civil liberties continues today, from racial prejudice to voting rights controversies to challenges to freedom of expression and religion.”
The exhibition runs from May 6 through July 1. The Library is free and open to the public. Hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10 AM – 6 PM. and on Saturday, May 19 and June 16, 9 AM. – 12:30 PM.
All are invited to the opening reception on Thurs., May 17, at 7 PM.
