“Coffee with the Captain,” a chance to meet Altadena Sheriff Capt. John S. Benedict and his staff and discuss community issues, has been rescheduled to Monday, July 8. It was previously July 2 (but that’s fireworks day in Altadena).
The meeting will be held from 5-6:30 PM at Café Culture, 1359 N. Altadena Drive.

How convenient to postpone the meeting until after the 4th. I’m sure the Captain doesn’t want to hear (again) about the problem with illegal explosives that turn neighborhoods into a war zone starting a few days before the 4th and continuing up to 10 days after the 4th. These are not “sparkler” fireworks, but heavy duty explosives that make our neighborhoods appear like a war zone. No one can go outdoors after dark because of the unsafe conditions created by the people setting off these high powered explosives. The same people set off these explosives every year and the same people are reported to the Sheriff every year. And every year all the Sheriff has is a bunch of excuses as to why this unsafe and dangerous situation is allowed to continue. Maybe when someone is killed or injured the Sheriff will finally do something about the problem.

I agree the days leading up and the days after the 4th are sometimes loud with fireworks. As it is in almost all areas of Los Angeles County and the surrounding cities. I have seen the Altadena deputies driving from one place to another chasing fireworks during this time of year. And I know they do all they can to hold those responsibile, accountable. Maybe the folks in the community firing these rockets off should realize by now that its not safe and its not neighborly. This is not a Sheriff’s issue, although they are responsible for enforcement of the laws, this is a community issue. I’m not sure what more the deputies can do then they already are by responding, confiscating, and issuing citations.
