This adorable little dog has been hanging around the housing complex at the 800 block of east Alameda St. in Altadena since April 1st. It’s shy and stand offish. The neighbors have been feeding it but the dog is not approachable yet. The dog will not come into a house. The neighbors are afraid that it may go out on Lake Ave or worst yet get eaten by the coyotes.

The Sue B. Dance Studio at 2525 N. Lake Ave. is offering eight weeks of Polynesian Cultural Dance classes on Wednesday afternoons starting April 11. Registration has been extended to April 9.
Instructor: Lynnanne Hanson-Miller will hold sessions for ages 6-9 and 10-13. Fee is $75 per student, with a $20 sibling discount.

Many if not most Altadena houses received a notice in the past week that a company was coming by to paint curb numbers and would return later to solicit a donation. This isn’t terribly unusual around these parts.
But one of our readers told us that someone appears to be riding its coattails to scam homeowners.

A consulting firm hired by the county Community Development Commission will hold three workshops this spring and summer as part of a “visioning process” to update Altadena’s community standards district (CSD).
The firm, RBF Consulting, will hold the workshops to get public input as the commission works to update the CSD. The CSD helps determine what is — and what isn’t — allowed by zoning regulations.

PUSD Board of Education members are pushing local charter schools to increase the diversity of their students and enroll more children who are learning English.
Scrutiny of the publicly funded but privately managed schools came while officials deliberated this month on charter renewals for the Aveson School of Leaders in Altadena, Aveson Global Leadership Academy in Pasadena and Pasadena Rosebud Academy, which meets at the Loma Alta Elementary School building.

Altadena Heritage’s “Heritage of Abundance” series continues with two presentations about the urban forest in the next month.

The heavy rain moved Farnsworth Park’s Spring Jam from the outdoor amphitheater into the Davies Building Saturday, where a small but enthusiastic crowd saw performances from a variety of acts. Here, dancers from Mexica Folklorico show the beauty of traditional Mexican dance. More after the jump.

“Space archeology” — an emerging discipline to preserve the historic evidence of mankind in space — is the subject of the Mt. Wilson Observatory Lecture at the Altadena Library.

A young male cat who is very sweet and friendly and in good shape showed up at our doorstep at 5 AM Sunday March 18th – VERY hungry and clearly lost. He wanted in our house in the worst way, so we let him in – a couple of coyotes frequent the neighborhood and we lost our dog last year. Our lights were on, and my impression is that he’s an indoor cat who somehow got out and is lost.

The Altadena Arts Council is looking for community-minded volunteers with an interest in the arts to become involved with the Council and the Community Arts Center at the Loma Alta school building.
Opportunities include board membership, internships, paid positions for arts instructors, and serving as arts advocates.
Executive Director Mary Ann Stevenson says she is “especially interested in bringing on board experienced instructors to conduct workshops for children and teens in visual and performing arts.” Candidates must have an Associates of Arts Degree or higher level training/teaching experience and submit a resume/portfolio.

Mina Brown of RBF Consulting told the Altadena Town Council Tuesday night about the visioning workshops that will be part of the plan to update Altadena’s Community Standards District (CSD). The workshops will be held on Wednesdays, April 4 and 25 at the gymnasium at Loma Alta Park, with a final workshop on June 6. All workshops are from 7 to 9 PM.

Lt. John S. Benedict, an assistant to Sheriff Chief Neal Tyler, has been named Altadena’s new sheriff captain, according to sources close to the sheriff station.
The selection of Benedict was confirmed by Lt. Duane D. Allen, Altadena Station’s public information officer, and Robert Klomburg, president of the Sheriff’s Support Group.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Altadena) provoked a tense exchange with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden during a House budget hearing Wednesday on proposed cuts to Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Mars program.
Schiff grilled Bolden for nearly 17 minutes about NASA’s plan to scrap two robotic Mars missions that would employ hundreds at JPL whose job duties otherwise end in August, after touchdown of the Curiosity rover.

Since its inception in 1969, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Law Enforcement Explorer Program has created new inroads of understanding between youth, law enforcement, and the community.
Deputy Explorers are not just “talkers.” They receive extensive training and then actively participate in community affairs and non-hazardous law enforcement activities.

The next ACONA meeting will be Tues., March 27, from 7-8:30 PM at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St.
Ole Landowski, head of the Environmental Hygiene Program for Los Angeles County will discuss “house and nuisance” issues.
There will also be an “open discussion” of the Ralphs market in Altadena. ACONA organizer Elliot Gold says that Ralphs “expects to send a spokesperson to respond to any issues you have with the store.”

Los Angeles County planning staff is recommending that the regional planning commission deny the Arroyo Pacific Academy’s bid to locate a campus at 183-205 East Palm St.
A staff report issued Thursday said that “The proposed project is inconsistent with the goals and policies of the Altadena Community Plan … The proposed project would be a drastic intensification of use compared to the previous group home for children on the site.

The Arroyo Pacific Academy recently closed a Small Business Administration loan for $2.8 million, according to a press release from the lender, Mercantile Capital Corp.,
According to the release, "With its new loan, Mercantile Capital Corporation will enable the school to expand in numbers and invest in additional well qualified staff.

The Altadena Bicycle Club (ABC) inaugural ride and social event occurred on Thursday, March 22 out of Steve’s Bike Shop. Two rides were conducted: the road bike was lead by Dorothy Wong and the Mountain Bike by Jeff Herring.
The Altadena Bicycle Club mission is to help build a more caring community by engaging community members while promoting cycling, fitness and environmental awareness. If you're out and about this morning, the Pasadena Police Department just sent word that Sunset Ave. between Orange Grove Blvd. and Yale Street will be closed until further notice.
According to a press release, "This is due to an on-going police investigation. There are no public safety issues and no request for the community’s assistance."
