The dropout rate for Pasadena public high schools remained static at 13% last year despite increases in the percentage of students who graduated on time, according to statistics released Tuesday by the California Department of Education.
The statewide dropout rate decreased from 14.7% for the 2010-11 school year to 13.2% for 2011-12.
In Pasadena Unified, 78.7% of students who began high school in the fall of 2008 graduated last year — a smidge better than the statewide average of 78.6%.

Obama‘s budget proposal, unveiled on Wednesday, would cut funding for planetary exploration at
NASA by roughly $200 million, although it still funds several high profile missions being planned out of the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge.
The proposed budget includes $1.2 billion for NASA’s planetary science division, down from the $1.4 billion in its 2013 budget.

- Park Service/Forest Service plan questioned: Rep. Judy Chu is asking questions about a new joint management proposal between the Forest Service and the National Park Service for jointly manage an area in the San Gabriel Mountains, says the LA Times. The proposal would allow the cash-strapped Forest Service to draw upon NPS’s resources for additional law enforcement, signage, trail maintenance and services. Visitors line up for the 2010 Altadena Guild home tour.
The Altadena Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital will host its 62nd Annual Home Tour on Sunday, May 5.
This year’s home tour includes four homes located near the intersection of Midlothian Drive and Meadowbrook Road. Three of the homes are examples of classic Spanish Revival architecture.

“The Hobbit,” the prequel to “Lord of the Rings” and the first of a trilogy of films adapting the J.R.R. Tolkien children’s classic, is the April Friday Fun Flick at the Altadena Library on April 26.
The adventure follows Bibo Baggins’ quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from the dragon, Smaug. Rated PG-13, the film runs 2 hours 26 minutes. Yes, there will be drinks and popcorn available.

The California Shakespeare Ensemble, which will be in residence at Farnsworth Park this summer, is premiering “Shakespeare’s Lovers” at Descanso Gardens on Saturday, April 20.

PUSD has reported that Jackson Elementary students are being released to their parents or afterschool programs early. According to the Altadena watch commander, it is related to the three burglary suspects currently being sought by the Pasadena police department who were last seen at Windsor/Woodbury. The authorities are setting up a containment area in the neighborhood.

“Pay attention and call the authorities” was the message of both the speakers at the March 26 ACONA meeting at the Altadena Library. Paul Barbe, civil engineer with the Traffic and Lighting Division of L.A. County and a team of officers from the Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol addressed residents’ concerns about street conditions and crime.

Altadena deputies made an arrest during a warrant search on the 200 block of West Harriet StreetThursday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Brian Mann of the Altadena Sheriff station, officers were serving a search warrant at the address when they arrested the suspect on charges related to being a person with a prior conviction possessing ammunition.
A witness emailed Altadenablog, reporting that multiple sheriff units and the helicopter were involved in the incident near the corner of Harriet Street and Glen Avenue,

As a part of its Centennial Year Celebration, the First Presbyterian Church, Altadena presents “One Way or Another,” an in-worship drama about two former Pasadena City College baseball players, Shig Takayama and Jackie Robinson, as they pushed up against the stubborn “whites only” barriers of the 1930s.
This short play highlights the friendship of these two young men, one Japanese-American and the other African- American, who grew up in same Pasadena neighborhood.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station is reporting that search and rescue team members rescued a hiker Saturday morning March 30.
According to a release, the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team along with sheriff rescue helicopter Air 5 responded at aroudn 10:19 AM to a hiker who had tripped and fallen on the hiking path. According to the release,

After five years of meeting, planning, and organizing, the Arroyo Food Co-op (Altadenablog sponsor) has signed a lease on a site in Pasadena, and has started a capital campaign to finally open its long-awaited community-owned grocery store.
