Construction has started on Fair Oaks from Woodbury to Altadena Drive, so be prepared for slow traffic and delays for at least the next two months. According to Ken Salehpour, area supervisor of construction for the LA County Department of Public Works, it’s a complete reconstruction of the road — concrete work (curbs and gutters) is scheduled for completion Friday, Oct. 19, and the existing street surface,

If you’re still scratching your head over that large, loud, low-flying object that orbited around Altadena twice last Saturday afternoon, there may be an answer. The aviation buffs on the Chaney Trail discussion group have identified it as a
C-17 military cargo plane.
We don’t get that kind of aircraft much in these parts, altho’ we do get the B-2 Stealth bomber a couple of times a year, flying over the Rose Bowl parade or winging its way to an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl Independence Day show.

Bill Westphal forwards a National Weather Service warning that we’re on Fire Weather Watch through Tuesday afternoon.
Santa Anas of about 24 mph with 50 mph gusts are forecast, with a drop in relative humidity, so it’s tinderbox time in these hills.
Bill says," Be alert for smoke or fire and report it immediately by dialing 911.

The German owners of an undeveloped 22 acre parcel at the end of Alzada Road have put it on the market for a cool $3.5 mill. Why is this a bad idea? According to one member of the Chaney Trail Yahoo discussion group:

The Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Dr., will host an Altadena Historical Society talk on the future of water in the foothill communities, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

Westphal WeatherCam view of Echo Mountain at about 4 p.m. this afternoon. While we fortunately don’t have fires in our area (cross fingers), the effect of the smoke is evident in this picture — and in your lungs and throat!

Rubio Canon Land and Water Assn. has sent a letter to its customers (including Altadenablog) that it is adopting a voluntary water conservation program, with a goal of reducing water use by 10% or more during the drought. Rubio is encouraging customers to do sensible things like adjust sprinklers to avoid overspray and runoff, avoid watering in the heat of the day,

Another Halloween over-achiever on Pepper Drive (Pepper seems to be a hotbed of holiday decoration this year). Of particular interest is that they’ve decorated the actual house to look like Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons!

The Pasadena Senior Center, in collaboration with Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels, will provide free home-delivered meals to seniors living in Altadena and Pasadena on Thanksgiving Day. If you know of someone who will be alone and homebound, and is age 50 or older, please call 626-685-6577 by Nov. 12 to arrange for a meal.

Two important hearings will be held today, at the same time (9 a.m.) and in different buildings in downtown LA that will affect the neighborhoods in Altadena.
Meeting #1 is a hearing at the LA County Business License Commission regarding RJ’s Liquors, allegedly a favorite hangout for alleged gang members and other upstanding citizens.
Meeting #2 is at the Regional Planning Commission regarding the Fair Oaks Townhouse Project,
