The very hardy Oozie Blues Band plays in 100+ degree weather at Farnsworth Park this afternoon during the Juneteenth Music Festival. Musicians, fans, vendors, and food providers sweated out this year’s festival with good humor.

There will be four new faces on the Altadena town council as voters today sent every incumbent home packing in the contested races.
Okorie Ezieme (CT 4602), Alice Wessen (CT 4603.01), Tecumseh Shackleford (CT 4610), and Ruth Neilan Edwards (CT 4612) won seats on the town council by comfortable margins. Wessen's was the tightest race,

Altadena town councilman Keith "Sarge" Gibbs forwarded a message he received from Tom Selinske of the PUSD Board as the "conflict of interest" controversy rages. It appears after the jump:

There has been a question raised if there is a conflict of interest in serving on an education advisory committee and also receiving a fee for service from the Pasadena Unified School District.

Mark in your calendars this Saturday that the Altadena Community Garden Annual Picnic runs from 1-6 PM at Loma Alta Park, 3300 N. Lincoln Ave. Tickets are $7 in advance ($8 at the door), children age 6-12 are $4, and children under 5 are free. Each Garden Member brings a dish to serve 40 (!) and can attend with for free with a guest (homemade dishes are encouraged).

The Dapper Cadaver (a Holllywood prop shop that is open to the public) has made a list of the "Dark Spots in Tinseltown" for you devotees of the goth and macabre (which we are). One of the listings is our own Mountain View Cemetery, which is used frequently for filming. They don't mention the mausoleum, tho', which to us is the most macabre spot in Altadena.

The Helen and Will Webster Foundation has awarded PUSD a $1.2 million, two-year grant to help pay for middle school improvements, including more teachers and instruction time, PSN reports. The foundation has been generous in funding other school district programs, including a salary for district chief of staff in the $200K range. Check PSN for the details.

Lots of discussion in the local newsgroups about snake sightings — there’ve been a lot of them lately. As a general rule, leave ’em alone, but it’s good to know which ones are harmless and which ones are not. These photos came from folks who saw these snakes in their yards:
The pacific gopher snake can be big, but it’s harmless (to you, unless you’re a rodent). Keep this one around.

The LA84 Foundation, along with the Southern California Tennis Association and the National Junior Tennis League, is offering a youth tennis program for children ages 8-17.

Steven Cisar of Altadena was barely nipped by a Latvian athlete to come in second at the world BMX championships in Taiyuan, China today. This helps his standing — if he wins the BMX trials in Chula VIsta on June 14, he'll be one of three men representing the USA BMX team at the Olympics this summer.

Altadena Heritage will host a garden party and its fifth annual Golden Poppy Awards next Sat., June 7, 5-7:30 PM. The party will be held at Ann & Chris David's home, 1077 Altadena Dr., built in 1923 and designed by Lawrence Stimson, who also designed the Wrigley Mansion in Pasadena. Altadena Heritage will also present its Golden Poppy Awards to eight of Altadena's most creative gardeners.

A sad story about Kirk Dowling, a Fountain Valley man who was trying to help a driver who crashed on the 134 near Pacific in Glendale at about 1 AM on Tuesday. As he was walking to the crash scene, CHP said he was struck by a vehicle driven by Sara Kacee of Altadena.
Says the OC Register:
Dowling suffered major head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Los Angeles County Parks will be holding a Juneteenth Music Festival at the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater starting at 10 AM on June 21. Jazz, blues, zydeco, and gospel music will be featured, along with lots of vendors. Farnsworth Park is at the corner of Lake and Mt. Curve.

In light of the ramping-up of interest in earthquake safety (and the Shake-Out in November), Altadenablog's compadre Cmdr. Linsenmeyer lets us know that there will be an earthquake safety seminar on Wed., June 18, 6:30-9 PM at the Cooper Auditorium, City of Hope Cancer Center, 1500 Duarte Rd., Duarte. The county is replacing some of the picnic tables in Farnsworth Park this spring. The new concrete tables, in a browny-buff color, look sturdy if undistinguished.
They don’t quite have the charm of the older benches they replace, which have the grizzly bear and tree logo of the state parks dept. on the base.

Got a heads-up from one of the newsgroups that a group of men are making the rounds of neighborhoods on the east side. They knock on doors, offer to fertilize your lawn, whereby a pack of guys will quickly cover the lawn with fertilizer and overcharge. Be cautious!

Via the Meadows website: the Altadena Community Garden, located at Loma Alta Park, 3330 Lincoln Ave., will have its annual picnic on Sat., June 28, 1-6 PM. Eat the wonderful produce, listen to the Brown Mountain Jazz Band, and enjoy meeting the gardeners and your neighbors. There will also be a raffle and silent auction. Last year drew over 200 people.
