Caltech will remember Giuseppe Attardi of Altadena, a pioneering DNA researcher, with a memorial symposium at Beckman Auditorium in Pasadena from 1:30-4:30 PM on Fri, Aug. 29. Attardi died on April 5 at age 84 in his Altadena home. Says Caltech Today:

Contra Costa Times has had more news of Altadena this week than PSN does some weeks. Today, it's a story about slaying victim Evelyn Mosely. Nothing new has emerged about who killed Mosely, 90, who was beaten and stabbed in her Lincoln Ave. home May 8 (the home was later set on fire). The county supervisors have offered a $20,000 reward for anyone who gives the authorities information on her slaying.

I was driving home tonight (Saturday) at about 8:30 and was entertained by a bear roaming around on the road by the bridge over the wash at Rubio Canyon for a good minute or so. This guy looked pretty good sized to me.
Hmm — since that’s the location of Gravity Hill, one of our local haunted areas, we’re wondering if we classify this as a bear sighting,

Everyone was Irish tonight at the Sheriff Support Group’s Farnsworth Park concert series with local favorites Those Manning Boys singing everything from pub-crawling ditties to U2.
We particularly like the fact that they bring a pub with them onstage.

Our Irish Pride dance troupe entertained the crowd as well.

“Mighty Mo” Melissa Martin, 25, took the championship at the Duramed Futures Tours’ $80,000 USI Championship at Beaver Meadow Golf Course (Concord, NH) this weekend. The Union-Leader says:
The Altadena, Calif., resident shot a 5-under-par 67 to capture the title by four strokes over Gerina Mendoza, a 23-year-old tour rookie from Roswell, N.M.
With her 12-under-par 204 total for 54 holes, a tournament record, Martin earned her second career Futures victory and the $11,200 winner’s check.

There may be a few hiccups in entering for an undetermined period of time — we’re switching the home network from Charter to ATT U-verse (newer technology, faster, cheaper, and we’re just getting honked off at Charter in general — don’t mention the four months we were on their phone system unless you want to watch our head explode).

KFWB is reporting that the quake you just felt struck @ 11:40 AM, is a 5.8 temblor epicenter about 2 miles from Chino Hills — usually get 4.0 aftershocks, and there’s a chance of it being a foreshock to something larger.

This email just came in, about 2:30 PM:
just had two young men run through my year from the Altadena Crest Trail with three b-b guns between them. They had been firing them and stopped on my driveway to reload. I asked them to leave (which they did after reloading…no hurry to do so). Then found two more hiding on our property line (the trail) obviously looking to shoot the other two.

Yep, we’re late on the updates. We had a meeting this morning with Altadena Sheriff Capt. Roosevelt Blow, to smooth our receipt of information from the sheriff’s office. We’ll also be establishing a regular log of sheriff activities, which will be appearing soon. Watch this space!

Just to let everyone know, our brown bear was back in our driveway on Glen Allen Ln again tonight. We scared him away and he was seen on Pinecrest after that. Called Sgt. Villegas’s office and then cell numbers and neither would take messages, so I guess he is not interested in helping …

Altadena composer Joan Huang attended the premiere of her work, “Impressions of Suzhou,” as part of the Huntington Library’s summer concert series. Huang, who grew up in Shanghai, wrote the piece to commemorate the gardens of Sozhou, China, where her grandparents are buried. It was a fitting premiere to celebrate the library’s beautiful new Chinese Garden (Altadenablog’s a big fan of the Huntington).

That Bill Westphal strikes again — found this tarantula (4 in. from tip to tip) crawling around. RIght now, she (or he) is in a Tupperware container and will likely go back into the woods (they’re an important part of the ecosystem, gettin’ rid of those bugs), but notice that there is yet another Altadena creature to look out for.

Frank GIradot’s Crime Scene Blog, as usual, is on top of things. Altho’ it appears a gunshot was heard, cops found the 19-year-old victim had fallen from a second story window. The victim’s live-in boyfriend, Tony Evans Taylor, 50, was arrested on an outstanding warrant (for making terrorist threats against the victim) and will likely be charged with murder.
