I learned from friends this evening that there is an adult male and two young men somewhere between late teens and early 20’s in a newer Ford Escape, stealing mail from mailboxes. They are Caucasian and all have shaved heads.

Down San Diego way, the Associated Press files this story that a mistrial was declared in a civil case involving a police shooting in Pasadena. Walter Villanueva, 25, of Altadena, has been charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend by a Pasadena policemen on the criminal end of this case. Full details here.

The Pasadena Unified School District is holding a series of community meetings in September to talk about the PUSD Facilities Master Plan, i.e. what are the needs at EVERY school in the district and how these needs were determined and categorized. If you have a child in the district, it's important to attend the meeting involving your child's school.

Altadena Sheriff Capt. Roosevelt Blow sent us these pictures from the United Peace Officers Against Crime Summer Camp, held Aug. 18-24 at the Alpine Meadows Camp Facility in Angelus Oaks. The camp staff consists of volunteers from law enforcement, fire fighters, and various community groups.
Over 300 kids participated this year, with the local sheriff’s station sponsoring nine campers. Among many other activities, the campers participated in canoeing, hiking, baseball, swimming, tug-o-war, art & crafts, basketball, and learned computer skills.

Altadenan Saul Bass was renowned for his arresting, blocky, almost-brutal film titles (many of his title sequences were better than the actual films!) Today's Smashing Telly blog features a documentary of Bass, with the master talking about his work.

Town council chair Gino Sund tells Altadenablog that the Altadena Town Council Land Use Committee will have two significant and controversial items on the agenda: an information item on the Eliot Middle School tennis courts, and the Monte Cedro development at the site of the old Scripps Home will be up for a vote to refer to the Town Council.

A steamy night at Farnsworth Park became steamier with the Latin jazz of Munyungo appearing as part of the summer concert series. During the set we sat in, we heard Weather Report, Charile Parker, and Miles Davis classics with a Latin tinge.

The pictures below show the situation of the house at 3508 N. Marengo, an area of nice, middle-class homes. The neighbor who took them tells Altadenablog that the house was used as an indoor pot farm and was busted in early August. Since then, a cleaning crew has been in, but all the stuff they cleaned out has been stacked out front and deteriorating for weeks,

Chatter on the President Streets newsgroup (Coolidge-Harding-etc. area) have reported the reappearance of a man who has been seen harassing and threatening women on the street and in Eaton Canyon. He's described as dark-complected, possibly Middle Eastern, and likely homeless. He appears unexpectedly and disappears. Deputies have been called, but there's little they can do unless something happens,

The LA County Dept. of Parks and Recreation is starting "Tiny Tot Adventures," for children ages 2-5, this Wednesday and going thru June 20, 2009. Arts and crafts, sports activities, circle time, gardening, field trips, and more are part of the fun. It meets at Charles White Park, 77 Mountain View St., from 9 AM-12:30 PM and it's absolutely free.
