The old Edison Elementary School on Glenrose already hosts the Nia charter school, and up until last spring, the failed Rhythms of the Village charter school. A new tenant will be moving into the Rhythms portion, and writerdeb @ Altadena Above It All relays a message from Elliott Gold about Oak Knoll, the new school planned for that portion.

Despite complaints from nearby residents that began after the school opened this month, the Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School has been "very constructive and very responsive" to neighborhood concerns, says Principal Shahe Garabedian.
Sahag-Mesrob's campus at 183-205 E. Palm St., which opened Sept. 2, is facing two major hurdles: complaints by neighbors claiming there was no or inadequate notice of the 250-student school opening in the neighborhood;

The Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Works will hold two meetings during the day tomorrow, Wed., Oct 1, at the upper Davies Building Community Room at Farnsworth Park, 68 E. Mt. Curve.
The 9 AM meeting will be a community meeting with county engineers to discuss why they denied a request for speed humps on Wapello between Marengo and Lake Ave.

Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that Joe Olivarez of Altadena and Frank Bazzo of Murietta were sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday in a murder-for-hire scheme in downtown Riverside. Details here.

our earlier article on the Bright Futures Scholars program to say that over 400 scholars have been nominated by their schools to participate in the program. Pictured are just some of the 2008-09 scholars at a Sept. 20 meeting.

Just making the rounds that Judge Joseph De Vanon ordered the La Vina Homeowner's Association to pay the county's legal tab of $783,944 in attorney's fees. La Vina HOA has been involved in extensive litigation to keep promised access trails closed around the gated community. The court recently said that the trails must be opened, altho' La Vina has filed an appeal.

A puzzling event on Sonoma Dr., covered by KABC: somebody torched Reginald Ingram's Obama campaign sign. Ingram is one of the few African Americans on Sonoma, lending a sinister cast to the whole event. Video is here.

PSN front-pages a Janette Williams story on Mack Ray Reynolds, a serial child killer who confessed to killing six children and has been implicated in the deaths of up to 20. Reynolds hanged himself on Death Row in San Quentin in 1970, and had used his job as a heavy equipment operator during the highway construction boom to dispose of the bodies.

Frank Girardot's Crime Scene Blog notes the arrest of Mark Walter Sonnenburg, 53, a former teacher at Eagle Rock Montessori School and The Walden School in Pasadena. Sonnenburg was arrested by LAPD on charges that he molested two 9-year-old girls, including a former student, 20 years ago.

The only working computer in the household had to go back to Spawn 1 (big school project, and hey, it IS her computer). Mac the main computer is still in the shop, and Dell XP still doesn't want to go on the internet with ATT.

Outpost for Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Monster Drawing Rally on October 12, 2008, from 3pm-7pm at the William D. Davies Memorial Building in Farnsworth Park in Altadena.
The event will consist of four one-hour shifts with approximately 25 artists drawing simultaneously each hour.

The Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa, starts its annual "In-N-Out Food For Thought Reading Program" this Sat., Oct. 11, and running through Sat., Nov. 22. Children ages 4-12 check-out and read five library books and receive a certificate for a free hamburger or cheeseburger from In-N-Out Burger.

Sept. 22: Two men were arrested for possession and sales of pirated DVDs on the 2200 block of N. Lake Ave.
Sept. 23: Adult male was assaulted with a firearm in a possibly gang-related crime on the 500 block of Crosby St. Non-life-threatening.
Sept. 25: Corner of Ventura St. and Windsor Ave., two men arrested for possession of marijuana for sale.

Michael Patris, author of Mount Lowe Railway, will present a slide show and talk about the history of Altadena’s famous “railway to the clouds.” Built by Civil War balloonist Thaddeus S. C. Lowe and opened with great fanfare on July 4, 1893, the Mount Lowe Incline Railway was hailed as “Earth’s Grandest Mountain Ride.”
This event is jointly sponsored by the Altadena Historical Society and the Friends of the Altadena Library.

Danny’s Farm, 3064 1/2 Ridgeview Dr. in Altadena, is one of our favorite places to take the kids — a place with real farm animals that’s incredibly reasonably-priced, and right here in town. This year, they’re inaugurating their first annual Fall Pumpkin Festival from Sun. Oct 26-Thurs. Oct. 30, 4-7 PM.
Activities include refreshments (by THE SPOT catering), cupcake decorating, arts & crafts, the petting farm, and a pumpkin patch.

Webster’s Fine Stationers, 2450 N. Lake Suite B, will celebrate its belated grand opening on Thurs., Nov. 6, with a day of activities and a benefit for the
Quality of Life Center.
Owners Scott and Lori Webster said that 15% of the take that day will go to the Quality of Life Center, which is involved with low-income, at-risk youth and families in the Altadena/Pasadena area.
