“Alan’s War”: a local soldier’s graphic novel

Alans Thanks to Altadenablog reader Tom Kosakowski, we’ve just found out about Alan’s War, a graphic novel by the French artist Emmanuel Guibert.  Guibert has illustrated the memoirs of Alan Cope, a soldier from the Pasadena/Altadena area who served in WWII.  As a comic geek, what we’ve seen looks pretty good (our major geek credential is that we saved Stan Lee’s seat for the debut showing of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”).  Check it out!

Altadena Library board seeks to fill vacant seat

Library bug The Altadena Library Board of Trustees is accepting résumés of those persons who would like to serve on the Altadena Board of Library Trustees.  Currently one position is vacant for the unexpired 2011 term.
 
Those applying must be 18 years of age and a resident of Altadena.  The Board meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m.
 
The Board will interview potential candidates at the November 24, 2008, 5:00 p.m. meeting and make an appointment to fill the vacancy at this meeting.

Haunt-a-Dena

Of course, we have our areas that are “haunted” all the time in Altadena, such as the Cobb Estate (e.g “The Haunted Forest”) and Gravity Hill.  But this time of year, the ‘haints come out in otherwise normal neighborhoods.

Granddaddy of ’em all is the “Haunted Yard” at 1640 Braeburn, which every year sets new standards in wretched excess (this is definitely NOT for the little ones!)

On the other hand, there’s the more pastoral effect of this line of scarecrows at the corner of Altadena Dr.

“Tour de Altadena” set for Dec. 6

Antique-bicycle The Altadena Sheriff’s Station with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Athletic Association (LASAA) will be holding the 2008 Tour of Altadena.

The event will take place Sat., Dec. 6, 2008 from 9 AM until 2 PM.

The Cycle-Thon is a 12.5 mile fun ride through Altadena. Start and finish will be at the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, 780 East Altadena Drive. The ride starts at 9 AM. After the bike ride there will be a barbecue at the Station featuring hot dogs,

Sahag Mesrob board sends letter to neighbors

Two weeks after Los Angeles county zoning officials threatened to shut the school down, the chairman of the Sahag Mesrob Armenian Christian School said in a letter to the neighbors that they have delivered over 1,400 names and addresses of parents and local supporters to officials.

Exactly who they delivered them to isn't clear; the letter says that "We already have delivered to city officials last week over 1,400 names and addresses of parents and local supporters,

Heavyweight electeds take on Measure TT (sorry Gino!)

This letter in PSN supporting Measure TT on Tuesday's ballot carries the signatures of Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, Sierra Madre mayor Kurt Zimmerman, and "an Altadena resident" named Gino Sund.  Sund, of course, is an elected town councilman and is in fact the council chair, the nearest thing we have to a mayor — but this is apparently of no interest to PSN.

Thanks to generous Altadenablog readers who contributed to our team, Rosie’s Blue Lobsters, for the annual Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles Buddy Walk at Santa Anita Park on Sunday. We raised over $1,300 to support families and individuals with Down Syndrome (and there’s still time to make a contribution!).  The weather was great and the company was greater!

Gardeners robbed on Tanoble

Crime scene tape Making the rounds of the newsgroups: gardeners working at a home on the 2400 block of Tanoble were robbed of their truck and all their equipment, about 12:40 Monday afternoon.  Nobody was hurt, and nobody was caught so far.

Altadena man pleads not guilty in killing of four

Corey_King_091008 reduced Corey Lynn King, 18, of Altadena, has pleaded not guilty to killing a woman and her three daughters and setting fire to their Lancaster home Sept. 9.  King is being held without bail.  The AP story is here.

King has also been questioned in the Altadena murder of 90-year-old Evelyn Mosely, who was found in her burning Lincoln Ave. home in May.

Crime scene tape This message, by retired Pasadena Police Lt. Tom Oldfield, has been making the rounds of local newsgroups:
This evening (Thus. Nov. 6), 4 PM, I was walking our dog eastbound on Midwick approaching Midlothian. I saw two young men walking through the front yard of the house on the southeast corner of Midwick and Midlothian (2174 Midlothian). As they reached the north side of the house they walked to the rear of the house and then out of sight southbound behind the house.

St. Elizabeth cell tower rises again

Bo Astrup at the Altadena Neighborhood Alliance is asking people to submit comments to the city of Pasadena as it considers changes to its telecommunications facilities and equipment rules and regulations.  The neighborhood alliance has opposed constructing a cell tower on the property of St. Elizabeth's Church.  The church is in Altadena, but Pasadena is just across the street.

PUSD looking to fill Measure TT oversight committee

On Tuesday Nov. 4th the communities of Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre passed Measure TT by an overwhelming majority (74.5%). This is a public schools facilities improvement bond.

The district is required to establish an independent Citizens' Oversight Committee to scrutinize how bond funds are allocated and spent. The Oversight Committee must include representation from the business community,

Altadena Relay for Life meeting Wed.

We recently met with Sarah Eagle of the American Cancer Society.  The society is planning on holding a fun event, the Relay for Life, at Farnsworth Park in August of '09.

Several communities have been holding similar relays for years, so this will be a first for Altadena, Eagle says.  The actual "relay" will be a 24 walk around a particular track.

Danny’s Farm wins the trifecta!

Picture 13 … or so it seems.  This flyer tells us that Danny’s has won “Employer of the Year” from the Pasadena Mayor’s Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities,  a commendation from Supv. Mike Antonovich, and a recognition from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino.  David May of Danny’s Farm won “Employee of the Year” award from the mayor’s committee.

Two burglaries on President Streets

Crime scene tape Making the rounds of the President Streets newsgroup: one resident lost a laptop that was stolen from their car on Monday night, and another reported being burglarized that afternoon: two men arrived at a home, and one talked to the wife while she was gardening while the other apparently went into the home while she was distracted.  No report on what was stolen in that incident.

The men were described as black, mid-20’s – early 30’s.  All was reported to the sheriff,

In addition, there will be three Chamber mixers that are also ribbon-cuttings for new businesses.  All mixers run from 5:30-7 PM, admission $5 for members, $7 for guests, and bring a raffle item and promote your business.

Sacred Heart’s International Festival this weekend

Sacred Heart Church, 600 W. Mariposa, will holds its International Festival on Fri., Oct. 17-Sun., Oct. 19.  LIve entertainment, great food, carnival rides, and more.  For more information, call 794-2046.
