This KABC7 report, shot largely at the Altadena Sheriff's Station, is about a request for LA County to provide 347 deputies to assist in the Presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. It also sounds like they're asking for them for free, but at an expense of a couple mill for local taxpayers. The situation is still fluid,

When we drove by Wednesday morning, the Sahag Mesrob school on Palm was still operating, despite LA County Planning's affirmation that the school is violating county zoning ordinances. We have called the school asking for comment, and are still awaiting a response, but we thought we should share this email that went out several days ago from county zoning enforcement to one of the neighbors:

The Cultural Heritage Committee of the Pasadena-Foothills Association of Realtors recognized local Realtor (and Altadena Heritage guy) Steve Haussler for his contributions to the preservation of Pasadena’s architectural heritage. Haussler was honored with the 2008 Restoration and Preservation Award for his twenty-six year commitment to restore and preserve historically-significant homes and neighborhoods. Details on his blog.

Didn't have a chance to get this in earlier, but yesterday's PSN has a feature on Rosey Bell and Altadenan Vicki Laidig McCuish, who have developed a friendship rooted on supporting each other through bouts of cancer. Their 2004 "high tea" to celebrate their success has evolved into a major holiday fundraiser for The Wellness Community.

Nia Educational Charter School, 119 W. Palm St., will hold a Christmas/Kwanzaa bazaar, 8AM-4PM. The bazaar will feature local vendors showcasing their wares. The event will also include a yard sale, with the proceeds going to the school for needed supplies. For more information, call (626) 798-7900.

The Balian mansion — one of Altadena’s cherished holiday traditions — just fired up the lights tonight. Sometime during the season, go by the intersection of Mendocino and Allen and see one of the best Christmas lighting displays in the country!

We've had two Sheriff's Support Group websites in our Comprehensive Links page since we've started, one "good" and one "not-so-good." Well, we have to change our description, because "not-so-good" has been spiffed up considerably, with up-to-date information, a membership form, clergy council data, even (gasp!) our precious Crime Log!

“If This Be Treason: A Foolish Guide to Pasadena” by Sanford Conn and Datlis C. Smith Jr., a 1929 tome that sounds part John Birch, part snarky comment. Mentioned in the article is Kate Crane Gartz, a Chicago steel heiress who came to live in Altadena and spent her life sponsoring lefty causes. Altadenan Rameses Barden, a wide receiver at Cal Poly,
was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation FCS All-America team for the second year in a row. Barden, who graduated this weekend, is now in training for potential bowl games and is preparing for the NFL draft in April.

‘Tis the season, when Caesar Augustus had a census and declared that all the world should be taxed. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
So the Altadena Library will be hosting tests for positions with the 2010 Census from Jan. through April of next year. The attached flyer has all the dates and particulars. You do not have to travel on donkeyback to get there.

Eric Mulfinger, an Altadena resident and teacher and parent at Marshall Fundamental Secondary School in the Altadena-adjacant part of Pasadena tells us that the school received a silver award on US News & World Report's list of the best high schools in the country. National Weather Service warns that combination rain and snow may fall overnight as low as the 1,500 foot level, which covers the higher, mountainous parts of Altadena. (Get your camera ready to take “remember when this happened?” pictures to amuse your children). Odds are good for heavy rain, wind, and cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow — those with livestock and sensitive plants are warned to get ’em inside or keep ’em covered overnight.

The Altadena town council told the county to go ahead and pursue an exclusive trash collection contract, ending the semi-exclusive arrangement now in operation.
What this means is, starting next fall, a single trash collection provider will service most Altadena homes, ending the semi-exclusive arrangement between Allied and Athens that now exists.

Last month, the Altadena sheriff’s deputies got the latest in high-tech policing: a license plate reader in one of their patrol cars that can read plates and alert officers if there’s anything suspicious (such as a a car owned by a fugitive, a stolen car, etc.)
That was the car that rolled to the report of a burglary at 2656 Glenrose at about 8 AM Tuesday morning. According to Sheriff Capt. Roosevelt Blow,

The body of a man apparently in his 30's was found in Eaton Canyon this morning, dead by a single gunshot to the head. A note was found and the sheriffs are calling it a suicide. PSN has the sketchy details.

From a New Zealand website (!) comes a story about Guy Richard Moore, of Altadena, who was sentenced by United States District Judge George H. Wu to spend a year and a day in federal prison and was ordered to pay restitution of $400,000 to the Internal Revenue Service and a fine of $6,000.

Since the LA County Zoning Dept. hasn't returned any of our phone calls for three weeks, we've been a little behind the curve in information about Sahag Mesrob Armenian Christian School's zoning problems. Neighbors tell us that the school, which received a notice of violation in October, appealed the county's denial of a "clean hands waiver." The next step in the process is the school presenting its case for appeal of the final violation notice to the a county hearing officer.
