Altadenablog columnist and local historian, will be giving a luncheon talk Sat., Jan. 15 to the Huntington Westerners at Beckham Grill, 77 W. Walnut St., Pasadena, at noon.
“How Illness Helped to Spread the California Dream” is the subject: using Altadena, Sierra Madre, and Pasadena examples, Zack will show in an illustrated talk how important illness was in driving western immigration between the Civil War and the 1920s — and why this legacy has been underestimated by historians.

Central Altadena Little League (CALL) is ready to start forming teams. Therefore, all Bantam (Farm), Coast (Minor) and Mountain (Major) players must try out on Sat., Jan. 8 or Sat., Jan. 15 anytime from 9 AM – 1 PM at Farnsworth Park. A player must try out in order to be drafted. Tee-Ball, Softball and Juniors do not try out.
In order to try out, all players must complete registration.

As family members look on, Dahlia Sayegh cuts the ribbon to officially open her new salon, The Beauty Room, on Friday afternoon. Sayegh (pronounced “sage”) was officially welcomed by members of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce at her grand opening — President Carrie Meyers holding the certificate, with C. Students working in local parks recenty graduated in ceremonies to mark the inaugural class of an innovative work training program.
Offered by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), the REAACH (Recreation Employment and Achieving Career Happiness) Program is a five-month program designed to provide high school juniors through college sophomores the knowledge and on-the-job training necessary to pursue a successful career in a recreation field.
In addition to attending Saturday workshops which covered everything from resume writing and interview skills to dealing with peer pressure and conflicts in the workplace,

The Altadena Ale & Wine House, 2329 N. Fair Oaks, will hold a its holiday wine tasting this Sun., Dec. 19, starting at 4 PM. And make some time for next Sunday: Owner Gail Casburn tells us that “We are having a Sparkling Wine/Champagne tasting on Dec. 26 at 3 PM so customers can buy bottles for New Year’s Eve.”

The “Here Comes Santa” Christmas party at Loma Alta Park today was full of young people and their parents, clapping, enjoying themselves, and of course, waiting for the toys.

Rappers One Call sang one of their numbers and a Christmas song, to boot.

There was also choir music, dancing, and other entertainment for the crowds. Famous Shoes and Straps and KDAY were among the sponsors of the event today,

Telling the story, Farnsworth Park’s recreation supervisor Angie Calleros was in tears.
When she contacted Altadenablog on Tuesday, they hadn’t yet collected any donated toys from the community for the park’s annual holiday party and toy giveaway for deserving children. Due to budget cuts, the event is run on a shoestring, and the park depends on community donations to make it happen.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station held its annual Food and Toy Distribution Saturday at the Altadena Community Center from 8 AM-noon. Approximately 250 families received boxes of food and bags of toys that had been collected by the Sheriff’s Station.
While the rain dampened Altadena it did not dampen the spirits of all the volunteers who helped at the event.

This is a triple astronomical header tonight: the winter solstice, a full moon, AND a total eclipse of that moon, all happening today and tomorrow. Surely a cosmic portent of something.
And pity we’ll miss it because of the rain.
However, Robert Klomburg tells us that this NASA website will host chats and will show live video of the eclipse from Marshall Space Center in Huntsville,

Residents in the President Streets area are reporting the theft of packages delivered by UPS and/or FedEx.
In one instance, a neighbor found a pear in their front yard and thought it odd, so they looked around the yard finding a water soaked cardboard box in the bushes. The package was addressed to their neighbors, likely stolen, but when the thieves opened the box and discovered that it was pears from Harry and David,

More rain is expected today as the core of this most recent storm passes over the Central Coast. We can expect 0.5″ – 1.5″ along the foothills throughout the day with another 0.5″

The question for us this week is: why would anyone park their car in the 24 Hour Fitness lot, since something gets stolen there frequently?

Between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM Fri., Dec. 15th – A grand theft occurred in the 500 block of E. Calaveras Street. The victim placed a delivery order on 12/2 and expected the package to arrive within a few days.

In a heroic demonstration of Altadena’s can-do spirit, over 200 shoppers and 25 vendors braved the worst rainstorm in decades to come out and shop at the Altadena Urban Farmers Market on Sunday.

- Councilmember Guarav Malhotra (CT 4611) resigned from the council, as he is moving to a home in CT 4601. He told the council he still planned to remain very active in community affairs, particularly in his former district, He is also working on a establishing a nonprofit organization to get kids at risk interested in competitive cycling.

It may be a dog eat dog world, but when it comes to personality, determination and a happy-go-lucky attitude, Luigi Navarro, an almost 4-year-old French bulldog, had all the other canines beat.
Owner Robyn Navarro was watching the television news on Nov. 8 when word came out that Pacoima-based pet food company Natural Balance was holding auditions for dogs to be on their 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade float.

All well so far at Canyon Crest Road in the Meadows. The “creek” is flowing hard and brown, but crews are on 24 hr / day with dump trucks keeping debris from clogging the storm drains. It’s still raining HARD though!

The LA County Sheriff has lifted the evacuations of neighborhoods in the La-C cities, and sent out this release:
Effective at 6:30 p.m. today based upon continued evaluation of the weather, the flood control system, and roadway access, Unified Command has lifted all mandatory evacuations for La Canada Flintridge and La Crescenta.

A large tree fell across Maiden Lane tonight, across from the Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School. Maiden Lane is blocked, and power is out from Lake to Ganesha, and Altadena Drive to Mendocino.

The top of the power pole, snapped off by the fallen tree, rests on the school’s fence. The still-upright portion of the pole is to the right.
