With the abundant fruit trees in Southern California yards, there’s usually a lot of wasted fruit which never gets eaten. In Altadena, Pasadena, and environs, there’s the added problem that we’re in an Oriental Fruit Fly (Bactrocera dorsalis), quarantine area, where fruit grown or brought into the zone cannot leave it for fear of spreading the agricultural pest.

The ninth annual Los Angeles County Technology Week is coming up Jan. 19-20 (OK, it’s really two days), which will be held at the Business Technology Center in Altadena.
“Diverse technology businesses are being pioneered right here in Los Angeles County,” said Dr. Mark Lieberman, co-founder of Tech Week, in a press release about the event. “The Los Angeles technology sector is unarguably one of the strongest technology economies in the world and our 9th annual Tech Week reflects that vitality.”

We can't end the day without acknowledging the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, and we saw this story today. It has a special significance for us, as we interviewed Nichelle Nichols about 30 years ago when she was the spokeswoman for a NASA program to get girls interested in science. Turns out that Dr. King was a Trekkie as well!

Some residents in Altadena are reporting the presence of squatters in homes that are for sale or have recently been sold but are in escrow.
The issue was also reported on the news, not for Altadena, but as a growing issue in vacant mansions on the west side of Los Angeles. That story was also on the news in New Mexico.
In Altadena, residents have notice that houses that were empty have furniture in them,

Our traditional Christmas picture is a Flemish painting by an unknown artist, c. 1515, “Adoration of the Christ Child,” which is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Several years ago, psychiatrist Andrew Levitas and geneticist Cheryl Reid made a discovery: the angel closest to Mary, and possibly one of the shepherds in the back,

One of several emergent issues in Altadena is the gate on Pinecrest, which is one of three entrances to Eaton Canyon and the nearby trail systems (the others are an opening at Altadena Drive and Roosevelt, and the entrance to Eaton Canyon proper on Altadena Drive). Popular with hikers and mountain bikers, the Pinecrest gate is the main entrance to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road. The gate is the responsibility of the City of Pasadena, but some residents of the adjoining Altadena neighborhood have keys and handle opening and closing.
