That chopper you hear is from a completed rescue around the Eaton Canyon area. According to the scanner, two were hoisted out, not injured, and they are being transported to Farnsworth Park and landing just east of the baseball diamond. More details as we get them.
UPDATE: Deputy on duty at Altadena Station confirms two uninjured “hoisted out of the canyon.”
UPDATE: The Altadena Sheriff’s Facebook page reports:
On July 29, 2013, at approximately 1904 hours (7:04 PM), members of the Altadena Search and Rescue Team responded to Eaton Canyon to search for two lost hikers. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter Air 5 assisted in the search and located the hikers on the Mount Wilson Toll Road. The Air 5 crew air lifted the hikers, both residents of Los Angeles, from the road to Farnsworth Park. Neither hiker was injured.

I’m puzzled. The hikers were on the Toll Road and uninjured, but so lost that they had to be rescued and airlifted to Farnsworth?

In all fairness to our rescue outfits, they have no idea on a call if they will be dealing with broken bodies, critical injuries, dementia, or an out of shape blob who should have stayed at home on the exercise bike. They respond for any eventuality, then send trucks back if not needed. They are there for all of us.
The questions remain though: Lost on the Toll road?? Uninjured and couldn’t walk downhill to the gate?? Maybe from another planet?
I’ve heard that the cost of helicopter rescues run into the thousands$$$, so why on earth did they need to be airlifted? Who is the right person to ask to get the real answer to this question on all our minds?
