Back then— when we were colonies,
and Britain was quite cruel;
the laws they made and laws they changed;
lived not by Golden Rule.
Intolerable Acts, as they were known!
Coercive— their solution.
Ironic too—- as we recall—
lead to revolution!
Two hundred thirty-seven years,
this birth from times forlorn.
Life, Liberty, and Happiness—
pursuit of truths inborn.
Guerilla guys, yeah that was us;
shoot fast, then dip from view.
A war is won so earnestly;
“Live Free or Die,” was true.
This Parchment grand! The nation’s will!
John Marshall said it best.
“To endure for ages yon..” —but still,
each year brought a new test!
What have you wrought? The crowds did ask.
Ben Franklin—-crafty egret.
Of human nature he knew so well:
“A republic—- it’s no secret.”
But old Ben, he continued on,
clearly framed that secret.
He plainly spoke and truly said:
“A republic—if you can keep it.”
