Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena will salute local jazz legend John Levy during the Aug. 15 Concert in the Park with jazz guitarist Brian Hughes.

Altadenan Levy, 97, was named to the International Jazz Hall of Fame 1997, and was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2006.  Starting as a bassist for the likes of Ben Webster, Erroll Garner, Milt Jackson, and Billie Holiday, Levy also played in the original George Shearing Quintet and acted as Shearing’s road manager.  In 1951, Levy became the first African-American personal manager in the pop or jazz music field.  His clients have included Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley, Wes Montgomery, Joe Williams, and Ramsey Lewis, to name just a few.
