Our own feelings about Pete Seeger are rather mixed (to say the least), but we’re always in favor of people singing together for any and all reasons, and we agree with the conservative commentator Victor Davis Hanson, who wrote something recently along the lines of “there’s more talent in Pete Seeger’s little finger than the whole of Madonna”! We’ll let you know when a time is firmed up for the event.
UPDATE 4 PM: Bill sends us this:
Start time is now firm at Noon, event going till about 3:00. People should come with instruments, including percussion and those who wish to perform should sign up at the door and expect to do one or two songs–more depending on the turnout. Songs should be in the Pete Seeger spirit–Which I guess I’d describe as Inclusive organic acoustic optimistic realistic peace & justice music.
Also, maybe you can include this in your post: There is a movement to give Pete Seeger the Nobel Peace Prize. People can find out about it and sign a petition at www.nobelprize4pete.org.
Also also, if you can link to
and tell people they can find out info on all of this there, I’d appreciate it.
Consider it done!

On the balance, I think Seeger has been an enormous influence for the better in this country – I agree that he was mistaken to think so highly of the “Russian Experiment”, but a lot of leftists in this country were taken in, more by their own youthful idealism than anything else, in hoping, unrealistically of course, that communism would succeed. I’ve known a few of those old lefties – Lester Breslow and Leslie Kish are the pair who come to mind immediately – I think Leslie told me once he was in the Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War – and both of them, like Seeger, got older and wiser.
But as for the line that Seeger – or any other protester – should protest what’s going on in some other country, I respectfully disagree. This is where he lives, this is where he should be aiming his criticism.
