On June 6, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Altadena Historical Society will be providing tours of Altadena’s (and Pasadena’s) best kept secret, the 1925 Mountain View Mausoleum. Newspapers reported that building costs exceeded $500,000, an astronomical sum in 1925 when average homes could be built for less than $10,000. The Spanish Revival building is constructed of reinforced concrete, clad with travertine marble, and roofed with Spanish tile. The spectacular interior is faced with many kinds of rare marble imported from Italy. The interior spaces are enriched with art glass windows and ornate bronze doors, light fixtures and grills. The 180 foot entrance galleria features a vaulted ceiling. Although the
building rivals some of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe, most people in Pasadena and Altadena have never been inside.
