The Altadena Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week April 12-18, 2015,  a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than warehouses for books. Instead, libraries and librarians are change agents within their communities, – transforming lives through innovative educational resources and forward-thinking programming. Libraries are doing their part to close the digital divide and level the playing field by providing free access to information and technologies that many in their communities would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.  Libraries help to ensure the American dream and promote democracy by providing service to all regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic status.

“The library has always been a place of unlimited possibilities,” said Mindy Kittay, District Director. “Whatever your interest or need, the library and the library staff are here to provide you the resources you need to accomplish your goals and dreams.”

The Altadena Library is celebrating National Library Week by offering a variety of programs all week long for children, teens and adults at the main and branch libraries.

The following drop-in children’s activities will take place during business hours in the youth services department of the Altadena Main Library unless otherwise noted.

· Monday, April 13-Friendship Bracelets

· Tuesday, April 14-Candy Chromatography

· Wednesday, April 15-Marshmallow Engineering (@4:30pm in the Barbara J. Pearson Community Room)

· Thursday, April 16-Perfect Paper Airplanes

· Friday, April 17-Tangrams

· Saturday, April 18-Book Swap (bring a book take a book)

In order to encourage teens and tweens grades 6-12 to use the library and its resources, we are introducing a unique, interactive participation program.  Reading is a component, of course, but other activities are also encouraged, such as filling out a Reader’s Choice survey, designing a poster for their favorite book, and recommending a Young Adult book to a librarian on April 16th, which is Teen Literature Day. Each activity is worth a raffle ticket toward a Vroman’s giftcard! Complete 4 activities to earn a free book of your choice. Also–we are offering a special screening of the film “Mockingjay: Part 1″ for teens on Friday, April 17th at 3:45pm in the Barbara J Pearson Community Room.

Meeting your dream book can be difficult, so for adults we are offering you a blind date…with a book. Books will be cleverly disguised and will allow readers to take a chance on an author they might not normally have chosen. The books will be on display near the Adult reference desk during the week of April 12-18 at the Altadena Main Library. If the first blind date doesn’’t work out, try another.

The Bob Lucas Branch Library will be offering free books and prizes for children who complete a book review from April 13-17. We will also have an inspiration station for children – create your own story book (supplies provided) from April 13-17 at the Bob Lucas Branch.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
