Poetry Corner: Valentine’s Day
from gloriana casey
Oh Valentine, oh Valentine,
from whence forth came this day?
That time shrouded in History’s mist—–
in ancient past, they say.
It seems that quite a few of saints
were martyred Valentines.
So many tales, but which is first—
religion’s long timelines.
That art of LOVE, from ancient Greece,
with Eros, we know well.
He shot 2 arrows, gold or lead,
to LOVE or —-to repel!
Still others say it’s courtley love
with Chaucer’s rhyme and sauce!
Though Shakespeare too, he adds his twist—
a play— “Love’s Labour’s Lost.”
in 19th century,
a woman, Esther Howland, gave
its modern history.
By 1881 it seems
the card business took flight;
$100,000.00 worth of sales
in Valentine delight!
Today we share those lovely cards,
chocolate and roses.
Though some do press for presents dear;
NOT diamonds? Turn their noses!
A holiday for things to share,
where LOVE reigns for the day.
Material things are nice— but then,
LOVE needs a longer stay!
So what are we to do today
in celebration pure?
For flowers wilt and chocolate melts,
but—–LOVE it should endure!
Well— LOVE can be for people sure,
but LOVE can be of place.
You live in Altadena town,
make that your loving ace!
You have no Valentine? Fear Not!
Make this a day of play!
For people that you meet today
just send a smile their way!
So celebrate and share your smile;
it is a HEART-full thing.
A smile that’s given out in LOVE
will outshine any bling!
